HPE’s Cray supercomputer powers El Capitan with liquid cooling that halves energy use and space
DUBAI – The world’s fastest and most efficient supercomputer has taken centre stage at GITEX Global 2025 in Dubai, as Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) unveiled its revolutionary Cray supercomputing systems.
Featuring a 100% fanless direct liquid cooling architecture, the system powers El Capitan, the world’s most powerful supercomputer, and marks a defining moment for sustainable high-performance computing.
This breakthrough system, showcased at the Dubai World Trade Centre, aligns with global efforts to make artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure faster, greener, and more scalable. The technology has also earned HPE multiple entries on the Green500 list, which ranks the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers.
HPE’s innovation comes as global AI adoption continues to drive demand for computing power. While next-generation accelerators have improved performance, they have also increased power consumption, outpacing traditional cooling methods. The Cray system’s liquid cooling solution directly addresses this challenge, allowing organisations to run large-scale AI workloads with greater efficiency and lower environmental impact.
Energy-efficient innovation
The direct liquid cooling design eliminates the need for fans entirely, using circulating liquid to draw heat directly away from system components. This method dramatically reduces power usage, utility costs, and noise levels within data centres. It also allows for double the cabinet density, meaning the systems require only half the floor space of traditional air-cooled setups.
According to HPE, this architecture represents a new era of efficiency in large-scale AI deployments, enabling data centres to handle intensive computational workloads while significantly cutting energy and operational costs. The technology supports more sustainable infrastructure development, aligning with global environmental goals.
GITEX Global 2025
The supercomputer’s debut was among the key highlights of GITEX Global 2025, the world’s largest technology and AI exhibition, which opened today under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The event, which runs until 17 October, features 6,800 exhibitors and 2,000 startups from 180 countries, focusing on AI integration, computing convergence, and sustainable digital growth. Major global players including AMD, AWS, Dell, e&, G42, Google, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, and Siemens are also participating.
The Dubai Ruler emphasised the UAE’s ambition to lead global technological advancement through innovation. “We want the UAE to be a global model in building an integrated digital economy driven by innovation, knowledge and artificial intelligence,” he said, noting the goal to raise the annual contribution of digital transformation to Dh100 billion by 2033.

During a tour of the exhibition, Sheikh Mohammed and his delegation visited several pavilions, along with displays by Amazon Web Services (AWS), e&, G42, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle, which presented advancements in AI, cloud computing, and quantum technologies.
As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, the Cray system showcased at GITEX Global 2025 sets a new benchmark for how supercomputing can balance performance, efficiency, and sustainability – a combination that will define the next generation of intelligent digital infrastructure.
